‘When I am laid in earth.’ Who isn’t familiar with Dido’s gorgeous lament? Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas tells the story of Queen Dido and her love for the hero Aeneas. After being put under a witch’s spell, she is separated from him and dies of a broken heart – but not before she has sung her final lament. This will be a real musical celebration involving the young singers of the National Mixed Youth Choir.
Michael Gieler, artistic director of Music Stages: ‘I grew up in Austria surrounded by opera: Mozart, Strauss, Verdi and Puccini were staples during my youth. I only got to know the masterpieces of the baroque period – pieces such as the St Matthew’s Passion and the operas of Purcell – when I moved to the baroque-mad Netherlands. It’s nice to be able to share this fascination with our audience.’
